“A magnificent cycle route spanning the width of North England. Beautiful scenery coupled with an epic challenge that will satisfy all types of cyclists!”

The Coast to Coast /C2C/ Sea to Sea Cycle Ride is by far the most popular long distance ride in the country. Starting from the west coast in Cumbria the route takes you through the Northern Lake District, over the back of the Pennine hills before descending to the River Tyne and the east coast.

Cycle Route Highlights
  • Breathtaking views from start to finish
  • The Lakeland town of Keswick
  • The Lake District views
  • Castlerigg stone circle
  • Hartside Café for a well earned coffee and cake after the climb
  • The Waskerley Way, disused railway line that takes you from Stanhope to Consett

Suggested 3 day itinerary (West to East). Please remember this is your holiday, we can tailor any package to fit your requirements and agenda.

Day 1 – Arrival day

  • Join the tour at Whitehaven. Whitehaven – a small, former mining town and port on the Irish Sea.
  • Overnight in Penrith or Newcastle and we will pick you up early in the morning and transfer you over to Whitehaven ready for a start around 10 – 11am.

Day 2 – Whitehaven to Penrith (53 miles / 86kms)

You start by “dipping” your rear wheel in the Irish sea at the marina, you will dip your front wheel in at the end in Tynemouth.

Following disused railway lines and minor roads all the way to Keswick. There is one significant climb at Whinlatter, with a few minor climbs earlier on. Keswick is a good lunch stop.

From Keswick you will head up to Castlerigg Stone Circle, PLEASE STOP HERE and allow yourselves 5 minutes to walk up to the circle and admire both it and the scenery that is all around you. Too many people just ride past this with their heads down and miss these wonderful views.

The route then traverses parallel to the main A66 road, following tracks and minor roads until you reach the market town of Penrith.

Day 3 – Penrith to Stanhope (44 miles / 71 kms)

From Penrith you will see the Pennine hills in front of you to the east. Ride through Langwathby and follow the route up over Hartside to the café at the top. Stunning views looking west on a clear day. From here it’s pretty much downhill all the way to Garrigill. More climbs out of Garrigill and head over the steep 20% climb to Nenthead. It’s then a roller coaster ride to Allenheads, Rookhope and finally Stanhope, stunning views all along. Keep an eye out for the disused lead mines.

Day 5 – Stanhope to Tynemouth (38 miles / 61 kms)

There’s a tough climb out of Stanhope, however after that it’s pretty much downhill all the way to the River Tyne at Swalwell. From there you follow the river, through Newcastle, past all the bridges to finish on the north side of the river at Tynemouth.
