The Hadrians Cycleway is a Coast to Coast ride with a difference, the beauty of this ride is not the achievement of riding from the west coast to the east coast of England, but in the fact that you have ridden and seen the living history of Hadrians Wall

Built by the Emperor Hadrian in AD 122 this 74 mile defensive wall was constructed over a 4 year period to defend the northern edge of the Roman Empire from the invading barbarians in the North

The route starts in the lovely seaside village of Ravenglass and heads up the west coast all the way to the inlet of the Solway Firth to Bowness on Solway (the start of Hadrians Wall) to Carlisle and onwards eastward over some very rural countryside before joining the River Tyne which takes you all the way through Newcastle upon Tyne to Tynemouth and the end of the route.

Cycle Route Highlights
  • Breathtaking views from start to finish
  • Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow guage railway
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort
  • Roman Army Museum (Greenhead)
  • Vindolanda Settlement (not to be missed)
  • Hexham Abbey

Suggested 4 day itinerary (West to East)

Please remember this is your holiday, we can tailor any package to fit your requirements and agenda.

Day 1 - Arrive Ravenglass

We can either meet you at Ravenglass or transfer you over from Newcastle or Carlisle if easier. If time allows take a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow guage railway.

Day 2 – Ravenglass to Silloth – (53 miles / 86 kms)

The day starts with you riding out of Ravenglass up the Cumbrian coastline with some stunning views of the western Lakeland hills over to your right. You pass through the pretty coastal towns of Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport before reaching your destination of Silloth. There are a couple of climbs at Egremont and Workington but nothing too difficult.

Day 3 – Silloth to Brampton (47 mile / 69kms)

Follow the coastline around the Solway Firth all the way to Carlisle, this is a very flat area but can also be quite windy with on shore winds coming from the west. Carlisle is a lovely town and the Castle is worth exploring. From Carlisle the route takes you to Warwick Bridge then on up a short climb to Brampton. There’s a lovely evening walk around Talkin Tarn just outside Brampton.

Day 4 – Brampton to Corbridge (43 miles / 69kms)

Today you will start to really see the sights of Hadrians Wall and other historic places of interest. Starting off with Lanercost Priory, this C12th monastery is a must stop destination. From here there are several short climbs, firstly up to Birdoswald Roman Fort then after a few miles a steep little climb at Greenhead to the Roman Army Museum. Vindolanda settlement is a must stop destination.

Day 5 – Corbridge to Tynemouth (34 miles / 54kms)

The last day and you will follow the River Tyne all the way to the North Sea at Tynemouth, passing through Wylam and along the old railway line to Newburn, Newcastle Quayside and onwards to your finish at the Sailing Club in Tynemouth.
