HOLIDAY OVERVIEW

The Condensed Hadrians Cycleway is a Coast to Coast ride with a difference, the beauty of this ride is not the achievement of riding from the west coast to the east coast of England, but in the fact that you have ridden and seen the living history of Hadrians Wall

Built by the Emperor Hadrian from AD122, this 74 mile defensive wall was constructed over a 6 year period to defend the northern edge of the Roman Empire from the invading barbarians in the North.  It consisted of 13 imposing forts along the route, as well as mile turrets and defensive walls up to 5 metres high and 2 metres thick.

This condensed route (101 miles) starts in the little hamlet of Bowness on Solway, which is officially the western most point of the original Wall, from here its a 90 min ride to Carlisle and onwards east, passing some of the best sections of Hadrians Wall and some very rural countryside, before joining the River Tyne which takes you all the way through Newcastle upon Tyne to Tynemouth and the end of the route.

Cycle Route Highlights
  • Breathtaking views from start to finish
  • Carlisle Castle
  • Lanercost Priory
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort
  • Roman Army Museum (Greenhead)
  • Vindolanda Settlement (not to be missed)
  • Hexham Abbey (slightly off route)
  • Corbridge Roman Town
  • Wylam Wagonway (disused railway)
  • Newcastles Millenium Bridge & Quayside
  • Segudunum Roman Fort

Transport

Depending upon where you spend your first night, we can put you up in either at the start or the finish or your route or even somewhere in between. We will supply you with transport to the start of the route or from the end of the route back to your vehicle, train station or airport.
We can also collect you from your home location, transfer you to the start and take you back from the finish to home, this is very popular with larger groups and can work out quite cost effective.
We operate three fully licenced 8 seater minibuses and cycle trailers so that your ride across is in comfort.
Bikes are stored individually and packed out with high density foam where necessary.
null

Accommodation

We only use good quality, cycle friendly, accommodation that is on, or close to the cycle route, generally guest houses, small hotels or inns. All accommodation is on a Bed & Breakfast basis with a full cooked breakfast and vegetarian options always available. We also try and ensure that there is always somewhere close by to have a decent evening meal and some light refreshments. Prices are based on twin or double room occupancy, with single room options available (may be subject to an additional charge).

Day 2 – Bowness on Solway to Gilsland (36 mile / 58kms)

We will transfer you to the start in the morning, take the obligatory photos and set you on your way for the first days riding. Follow the coastline down the Solway Firth all the way to Carlisle, this is a very flat area but can also be quite windy with on shore winds coming from the west. Carlisle is a lovely town and the Castle is worth exploring. From Carlisle the route takes you to Warwick Bridge then on up a short climb to Brampton.

Just east of Brampton you will pass Lanercost Priory (C12th Monastary) and then the Roman fort of Birdoswald, both are worth a visit.

There’s a lovely walk in the evening back along a preserved section of the Wall to Birdoswald Fort.

null

Day 3 – Gilsland to Corbridge (31 miles / 50kms)

Not long after your start there is a steep little climb at Greenhead to the Roman Army Museum (well worth a visit). Haltwhistle is a good coffee stop and the Roman settlement of Vindolanda is a must stop destination.  Hexham is also a good place to spend a short time and The Abbey is stunning.
null

Day 4 – Corbridge to Tynemouth (34 miles / 54kms)

The last day and you will follow the River Tyne all the way to the North Sea at Tynemouth, passing through Wylam and along the old Waggonway railway line to Newburn, Newcastle Quayside is a great place for coffee/lunch, then its onwards to your finish at the Sailing Club in Tynemouth.
