The Hadrians Cycleway is a Coast to Coast ride with a difference, the beauty of this ride is not the achievement of riding from the west coast to the east coast of England, but in the fact that you have ridden and seen the living history of Hadrians Wall

Built by the Emperor Hadrian in AD 122 this 74 mile defensive wall was constructed over a 4 year period to defend the northern edge of the Roman Empire from the invading barbarians in the North

The condensed route starts in the little hamlet of Bowness on Solway, which is officially the western most point of the original Wall, from here an hours ride to Carlisle and onwards eastward over some very rural countryside before joining the River Tyne which takes you all the way through Newcastle upon Tyne to Tynemouth and the end of the route.

Cycle Route Highlights
  • Breathtaking views from start to finish
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort
  • Roman Army Museum (Greenhead)
  • Vindolanda Settlement (not to be missed)
  • Hexham Abbey

We will transfer you to the start in the morning, take the obligatory photos and set you on your way for the first days riding. Follow the coastline down the Solway Firth all the way to Carlisle, this is a very flat area but can also be quite windy with on shore winds coming from the west. Carlisle is a lovely town and the Castle is worth exploring. From Carlisle the route takes you to Warwick Bridge then on up a short climb to Brampton.

Just east of Brampton you will pass Lanercost Priory (C12th Monastary) and then the Roman fort of Birdoswald, both are worth a visit.

Day 3 – Gilsland to Corbridge (31 miles / 50kms)

Not long after your start there is a steep little climb at Greenhead to the Roman Army Museum. Haltwhistle is a good coffee stop and Vindolanda settlement is a must stop destination.

Day 4 – Corbridge to Tynemouth (34 miles / 54kms)

The last day and you will follow the River Tyne all the way to the North Sea at Tynemouth, passing through Wylam and along the old railway line to Newburn, Newcastle Quayside and onwards to your finish at the Sailing Club in Tynemouth.
