About Our Holidays

Who are Pedal Power Cycling Ltd

Pedal Power Cycling Ltd is run by Ian & Sue Rochester and is based in the small fishing town of Amble in Northumberland, we have a small team of guides, drivers and technicians who work with us throughout the main season providing you with the perfect cycling holiday experience.

Established in 2001, initially as a cycle hire business for the holiday cottages and visitors to the area, we soon expanded to provide cycle hire further afield and also for an overseas cycle holiday company with groups riding the Hadrian Cycleway back in 2005.

We quickly realised that the services being offered in the market place for cycling holidays in the North of England were quite disjointed, with one company organising the trip but then subcontracting out a lot of the services to other providers, each adding their “mark up” to the price, with very little personal contact or local knowledge.

We knew we were able offer the full package, accommodation, bikes, baggage, transport and local knowledge all under one roof, at a very competitive price.
Pedal Power now have around 120 bikes on stock, including ebikes, road bikes, hybrid, mtbs and tandems in all sizes and we operate four, fully licenced minibuses for transporting people and bikes all around the country.

We have built great working relationships with many other cycling holiday businesses from all around the world and in the UK and as well as providing our own packages we also provide these businesses with individual parts or full packages for clients arriving through them. We will also act as their local agent and contact point for the client.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy is that “This is your holiday, not ours”. We will aim to give you the package you want, on the dates you want, with the accommodation you want, all at a sensible price.

Our Tripadvisor reviews show that we seem, on the whole to be getting this right.

Self Guided (Standard Package)

Our standard self guided trips are our most popular packages and allow you to start the day when you want, ride at the pace you want, stop off when they want and choose the route they want, all you need to do is reach your end destination each day.

We will do the following for you:

Provide you with good quality, cycle friendly, ensuite accommodation on a Bed & Breakfast basis, all accommodation will have been reviewed by us.   These accommodations are generally, guest houses, inns or small hotels or hotel chains.

Move your bag (one bag per person up to 20kg) each day from point to point so that they are there for you when you arrive each day.

Meet you at the beginning or finish and transfer you and your bike from your arrival point to the start or back from the finish point if required.

Present you with a “Certificate of Completion” and one of our 750ml Water bottles

Provide you with genuine maps (where there are maps available), route notes, Garmin gpx files and general information on the route including cycle shops and repair centres.

Be on call to assist you should you have any mechanical or medical issues.  There may be a charge should you be riding your own bike and have a mechanical issue.

Self Guided (Luxury Package)

Our luxury package, which we launched in 2019 is becoming very popular and it adds a bit of “pamper” at the end of a day in the saddle.

You will get all of the above on the standard package plus:

Upgraded accommodation to anything from bespoke boutique hotels, 4 poster beds, themed hotels, spas, a night in a castle, etc, we generally aim for 4* plus grading and it will often be the best available accommodation in the location.

Unlimited baggage transfers, we understand that we are often a short break in longer holiday itineraries and people may be travelling with 2 or more cases, this isn’t a problem on this package.

Free short sleeved, half zip, Pedal Power Cycling Ltd cycling top and buff.

Free recovery should you have any mechanical or medical issues (within 4 hour response).

null

Supported (Bespoke groups)

null

Supported (Fixed Dates)

This package is where we put together certain trips on fixed dates for group sizes of 8-16 riders and includes all of the bespoke package above but is aimed at solo riders, couple or families who would prefer the support of an experienced guide as well as wanting the enjoyment of meeting and riding with other riders of all abilities.

It is a great way to meet new friends.

Trip Grading

Trying to grade a route is very difficult, as one persons idea of a challenging ride can be classed as pretty easy by another, it also depends on the bike you are riding also the number of days you are doing it over.

We have tried to break it down to Fitness Level and Technical Ability.

null

Fitness Level

We are not aiming our rides at the elite riders, however saying that, in order to do ANY of these rides you will need to be reasonably fit, not have any serious medical issues and be competent on riding a bike, some of which will be on reasonably quiet public tarmacked roads in the UK (riding on the left!)

It will also depend on the number of days you are doing the ride over ie: The C2C ride is 136 miles, ridden in one day it requires a high level of fitness (and to be mentally unstable ?)

However, if it’s ridden over 5 days, 30 miles/day it would classified as a moderate to good fitness level.

Low – Predominantly flattish routes, inclines of up to 8% on occasions, distance generally no more than 25 miles/40kms/day.

These routes are suitable for most levels of fitness, riders with very little experience, families with young children

Moderate – These routes may have days where there is a greater level of climbing, inclines up to 14% on rare occasions, distances of up to 40 miles/65kms/day.

These routes are suitable for most riders, but there may be occasions where you feel like you need to get off and push, that’s not a problem.  Nice sense of achievement when you finish the ride.

Good – These routes will generally involve good climbs each day, inclines of up to 20%, often for some distance, distance of up to 60 miles/100kms/day.

These routes are suitable for experienced regular riders, you may often need to “dig deep” to overcome the challenge, may need to get off and push on some of the bigger climbs.  Great sense of achievement when you finish the ride

High – These routes will generally involve long distances 100 miles/160kms or further, lots of climbing.

These routes are suitable for experienced riders, with a high fitness level, who are riding long distances on a regular basis.

null

Technical Difficulty

In reality this only applies to MTB routes, anything that is classed as road or Hybrid/Gravel will be on tracks, tarmacked roads and cycle paths with little technical expertise required other than riding a bike and obeying the Highway Code.

Easy – Predominantly cycle paths, tracks and 90% “traffic free” areas

Moderate – Combination of cycle paths, tracks and tarmacked minor public roads

Hard – Some off road riding, may have technical sections including steep downhills, streams etc
Challenging – 50% or more of off road riding, very good level of off road/mtb experience required, risk of injury if inexperienced or careless.
