HOLIDAY OVERVIEW

This classic version of the Coast & Castles South cycle route follows the waymarked Sustrans NCN Route 1 for its entire length.

We recommend hybrid / gravel/cyclocross bikes for this route.

If you are wanting to ride it on road bikes, which many people do, most of it is easily rideable, however there are some sections of untarmacked, gravel or sandy tracks along the coastline where care needs to be taken as there are no easy diversions to avoid these without adding distance and also riding along more major roads.

The section from Beal to Berwick is NOT suitable for road bikes and we have an alternative route for road bike riders on this section (see maps below)

Starting from Newcastle, or alternatively from Tynemouth, the Coast & Castles Cycle Route follows the eastern coastline through Northumberland, passing through  Blyth, Amble, Warkworth Castle, Bamburgh Castle, The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, up to the fortified Scottish border town of Berwick upon Tweed.

From here the route turns inland and follow the route west along the River Tweed to Norham, Coldstream, Kelso, Melrose and Innerleithen before turning north over the stunning Moorfoot hills to Edinburgh.

This route can be ridden from North to South as easily as from South to North.

The whole purpose of this ride is not to put in as many miles as you can each day, but to enjoy the beauty and history that surrounds you. The whole area has a history of feudal warfare dating back over a thousand years, you will still see the legacy of this in the castles and fortified farms (Bastles) that still stand today on both sides of the border.

One of the highlights of this ride is to spend a night on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (tide dependent) This island is cut off by the tides twice a day, however when the tide is low there is a causeway that you can ride across on to the island, which has small hotels, pubs, cafes, shops and a small number of rentable rooms. When on the island you must sample the local “mead”

any package to fit your requirements, number of days and agenda.

Day 1 - Arrive Newcastle or Tynemouth/Whitley Bay

Newcastle has a main line train station, trains from London take around 3 hours and are generally direct.

If you are coming by car and want to stay in Newcastle, there is long stay car parking in several of the municipal carparks, charges are around £10.00 /day (24hrs).

If you are arriving by car we suggest having your first night in Tynemouth or Whitley Bay, we have an arrangement with a local business for free parking for the duration of your trip.

Newcastle is one of the major cities in the UK and as such there is plenty to occupy you in and around the area.

Tynemouth is a very cosmopolitan town with some great places to eat including Riley Fish Shack.  There are also some lovely beaches to walk along as well as Tynemouth Castle & Priory to visit (EH)

null

Day 2 – Newcastle/Tynemouth to Amble/Warkworth (46 miles / 74ms) Climb 920ft

The day starts with the obligatory photo at the start point at Newcastle Quayside, or you can start at Tynemouth Priory (this reduces the ride by 12 miles)

From here you will follow the NCN Route 1 up the coastline keeping the sea on your right, all the way up to Amble or Warkworth.

On the way you will pass St Mary’s Lighthouse, which you can walk to when the tide is out.  Follow the coast along cycle paths, through some industrial areas around Blyth, before you hit the open road in earnest and take the cycle paths and minor roads to the stunning beach at Druridge Bay and nature reserve, from here it’s a short ride to the fishing port of Amble and a further 10 minute ride up the side of the River Coquet to Warkworth, where you will see the castle on the skyline.

null

Day 3 – Warkworth to Beal/Holy Island of Lindisfarne (43 miles/ 69kms) Climb 1652ft

Today you will start to see the true beauty of Northumberland, firstly the picturesque painted village of Alnmouth, then follow the coastline to Boulmer and Craster, worth a short detour into the fishing village, famous for its kippers and a good coffee stop.

Back on route, you will follow quiet country lanes until you reach the imposing castle at Bamburgh, allow yourself some time to walk all around the castle, the views of the castle from the beach are stunning.

There is a short climb out of the village to Belford, then it’s downhill to your overnight stay on Beal or Lindisfarne. (DEPENDENT ON CROSSING TIMES AND AVAILABILITY)

If staying on the island or even just having a few hours on there then a walk around the island in the evening is a must, visit the photogenic Lindisfarne Castle sat on an imposing rocky outcrop and Lindisfarne Priory, home of the monks from the C7th

null

Day 4 – Holy Island to Kelso (43 miles / 69kms) Climb 1829ft

Ride off the island (when the tides allow you to) and head north once again, be aware this section is not really suitable for bikes on anything narrower than a 28mm tyre, we do have an alternative minor road route to Berwick for road bikers.  Follow the route to Berwick upon Tweed which is surrounded by a magnificent fortified Elizabethan town wall dating back to the C16th.

We then turn inland and follow the route to Coldstream, home of the Coldstream Guards and then to Kelso for your overnight.

Kelso is a lovely town on the junction of the Rivers Tweed and Teviot and is famous as a great salmon fishing location.

null

Day 5 – Kelso to Innerleithen (30 miles / 46kms) Climb 1852ft

Continue along the Tweed valley until you reach the town of Melrose, famous for it’s ruined Abbey, it is then a lovely ride along through Traquair Forest to Innerleithen.
null

Day 6 – Innerleithen to Edinburgh (35 miles / 56kms) Climb 1859ft

Your final days riding will take you north again out of Innerleithen and into  the Moorfoot hills, this is just a steady climb through some stunning countryside.  Once you reach the top you have a great view looking down on Edinburgh and it’s suburbs.

The NCN1 takes you along a winding route towards the suberbs of Edinburgh, before entering the main area of Edinburgh. We will meet you at the base of Arthurs Seat next to the Parliament Building and Holyrood Palace.
