HOLIDAY OVERVIEW

Northumberland is a beautiful, unspoilt county that borders with Scotland to the north and Cumbria to the west. The county’s history is one of feudal disputes dating all the way back to Roman times when the Emperor Hadrian constructed a 73 mile defensive wall from the east coast to the west coast to keep out the marauding Celts in the north. Since those times there have been many conflicts between the English and the Scots, with Northumberland often taking up the front line of the battleground. As such Northumberland is littered with castles and other fortifications which were designed to protect the local populations and show a strength of power.

The scenery of the county is one of big open spaces, stunning beaches and history around every turn.

This is a very flexible route that we can tailor to your individual requirements for shat to see, distances to ride and places to stay.

Invariably we suggest your ride starts and ends in he stunning market town of Alnwick in central Northumberland, after a night in the town you will ride out in the morning, past the Castle and towards the Northumberland coastline where you will join the NCN Route 1 heading north.

The route will come full circle after 3-5 days after which time you will have covered a significant part of the county in an anticlockwise direction.

Cycle Route Highlights

As well as stunning scenery around every corner, there are many places of historical interest to stop and see, a few of which are listed below:

  • Alnwick Castle
  • Alnwick Gardens and Treehouse (with restaurant!)
  • Craster – fishing port and famous for it’s kippers (smoked herrings)
  • Dunstanburgh Castle
  • Bamburgh Castle
  • The Holy Island of Lindisfarne – there is a causeway to get onto the island which is cut off from the mainland twice every day by the tide.
  • Berwick Ramparts
  • Norham Castle
  • The Cheviot Hills
  • Cragside House – first house in the world to be lit by hydro electric power
  • Warkworth Castle
